Overview

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance dam is located in Benshangul Gumuz Regional state, at Guba Wereda some 850 km from Addis Ababa. It is the iconic mega project of all in the history of Ethiopia which has been constructed by the government and people’s of Ethiopia with exerting their money, labour, skill as well as knowledge without any intervention from outside.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance dam is located in Benshangul Gumuz Regional state, at Guba Wereda some 850 km from Addis Ababa. It is the iconic mega project of all in the history of Ethiopia which has been constructed by the government and people’s of Ethiopia with exerting their money, labour, skill as well as knowledge without any intervention from outside.

The work on the project was commenced on 02 April, 2011. Up on completion of work on the project, it would have an installed capacity of 6450MW having a total of 16 units with a generation capacity of about 400 MW each. Currently, the overall work on the project has reached 58%.

Works on the main dam, saddle dam, power house, spillway, access road has undertaken over the past five years. Currently, the remaining works on the main dam, saddle dam, electro mechanical and hydraulic works, has been carried out steadily.

The construction of four diversion box culverts has completed and the remaining electro mechanical works on the diversion box culverts was carried out so far.

Furthermore, electro mechanical works on the power house has been carried out including transportation of transformers for the power units.

Up on completion work on the project, the main dam would have 145m height and 1.8km length having a reservoir capacity of 74b3 water.

The 80 billion birr project is totally financed by the government and peoples of Ethiopia including Ethiopian descents living in abroad.

The Civil work on the project has been carried out by Salini Imprejilo an Italian based company whereas, the electro mechanical works has undertaken by Ethiopian Metal and Engineering Corporation (METEC).

The project creates job opportunity for more than 10,600 Ethiopians including deployment of 353 foreign personnel. This in turn, print out a remarkable advantage for technology, knowledge as well as skill transfer to Ethiopian professionals that would help us to realize our long term plan to carry out huge projects by own force.
